The high-definition DVD format war is over, but U.S. consumers remain unenthusiastic toward players supporting the winner Blu-ray, a survey showed.
Nearly seven in 10 people polled by Harris Interactive knew that Blu-ray had beaten HD DVD, and nearly a quarter of them said they had been waiting for the rivalry to play itself out before buying an HD player. By April, however, few of the respondents had actually bought a player.
Based on an online poll of more than 2,500 U.S. adults, Harris found that nearly nine in 10 people own a standard DVD player, but fewer than one in 10 reported owning devices available today for playing HD content, namely, HD DVD or Blu-ray disc players, Sony PlayStation 3, and the external HD DVD player for Microsoft’s Xbox 360. These numbers are surprising, given that more than a third of consumers overall report owning an HDTV. (More..)

Bill Gates will demo a new multi-touch computer and interface today called TouchWall at the Microsoft CEO Summit in Redmond.
TouchWall refers to the touch screen hardware setup itself; the corresponding software to run TouchWall, which is built on a standard version of Vista, is called Plex.
TouchWall and Plex are superficially similar to Microsoft Surface, a multi-touch table computer that was introduced in 2007 and which recently became commercially available in select AT&T stores. (More..)

Western Digital’s line of Caviar GP is the only drive in Western Digital to offer an astounding 1 terabyte capacity in a single drive! The combination of extremely large storage capacity and low power consumption was irresistible so we just had to give it a try.
Initially, it yielded poor results in WinBench 99 and compatibility problems prevented us from delivering the Platter Data Transfer Profile and the Data Transfer Rate results. So, we decided to redo the WinBench 99 tests with a small workaround. Man, did that make a world of difference! Read on and find out!
Here’s a quote from the review :-"The Western Digital 1 TB Caviar GP delivers a terabyte of storage capacity with low power consumption at a relatively low cost. If large, affordable storage capacity in a single drive is what you are looking for, then this is the drive you are looking for." Link : Western Digital 1 TB Caviar GP Serial ATA Hard Drive Review

Now, that must sound pretty inane. After all, overclockers employ all kinds of power-guzzling methods to improve their CPU’s overclockability. However, there are many good reasons to do so.
In this guide, we will not just look at theoretical tips on reducing power consumption in overclocked PCs, we will also show you how well they work in real-life situations. Best of all, we will show you why they will improve your PC’s power efficiency without any real loss in performance.
Here’s a quote from the article :-"Just by using these two tips, you can radically reduce the power consumption of your PC. The first step tackles the processor’s power consumption when it idles while the second step attacks its power consumption under load. Together, they will really bring down your overclocked PC’s power consumption. Do your bit for the planet - start using these two tips today!" Link : Reducing The Power Consumption Of Overclocked PCs

It was just another day when I left my PC running overnight to download files while I hit the AC (air-conditioner) and went to bed. However, when I took a look at the PC the next morning, I realized that a few keys on my Saitek Eclipse keyboard were not functioning. How odd!
I had never dismantled a keyboard before. Nevertheless, I went ahead and took it apart. No beatles were found stuck under the keys and the silicone layer looked fine. Gently peeling off the silicone layer revealed the "sensor" layer. Everything looked fine at first sight, but when I took a closer look...
Here’s a quote from the editorial :-"...the Dash/Underscore key, the Equal/Plus key, the F9 to F12 keys, the PrtScrn key, the Scroll Lock key, the Pause/Break key, the Insert and Delete keys, the Home key, the Page Up and Page Down keys, the End key, the numeric 7, 8, and 9 keys, the NumPlus key, the Volume Up and Volume Down keys as well as the Right Click key are all dead. That’s a total of 22 keys." Link : ED#89 : My Saitek Eclipse Goes Kamikaze!

Last December, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2007, much earlier than was originally announced by the company. According to the documentation for the service pack, in addition to rolling together all the patches released since the product launch, the update also includes fixes for 455 issues throughout the entire Office suite.
As usual, Microsoft is providing at least 30 days notice before allowing the service pack to be distributed automatically. The company is releasing Service Pack 1 via Microsoft Update (for Vista and XP) on June 16, 2008. Not everyone will see the update on the first day though. (More..)

Project Granola?
Apparently, that’s the jokey nickname that’s been given by some in the company to Microsoft’s (MSFT) new online strategy, in the wake of its failed efforts to acquire Yahoo (YHOO) that ended in a big heap of mess this past weekend.
Now, sources tell BoomTown, it is all about “organic”–hence the image of a healthy handful of granola (except for the fact that, in my experience, nobody really likes granola after eating it as much as they think will before). (More..)

Microsoft Corp. has warned users updating to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that they won’t be able to downgrade from Internet Explorer 7 to the older IE6 without uninstalling the service pack.
The warning first appeared in a post Monday to a company blog written by the Internet Explorer development team. Microsoft released Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update as an optional download Tuesday.
"If you choose to install XP SP3, Internet Explorer 7 will remain on your system after the install is complete," said Jane Maliouta, an IE program manager, in the blog entry. "Your preferences will be retained. However, you will no longer be able to uninstall IE7. If you go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, the Remove option will be grayed out." (More..)

EVGA, a leading supplier of graphics cards, this week said it had begun to sell USB graphics adapters (UGAs) for personal computers (PCs) that can be plugged directly to USB connectors and do not require any spare PCI Express or PCI slots. The new devices utilize technology from DisplayLink and may be useful for notebooks or small form-factor desktops that cannot be opened, but require additional display or displays.
“DisplayLink technology enables us to deliver a UGA that is affordable, portable, and easy to use, which dovetails perfectly with EVGA’s strategy of penetrating broader consumer markets. At the same time, we hope that the EVGA UV12 and UV16 will help bring DisplayLink’s exciting USB display technology to a wider mainstream audience,” said Joe Darwin, director of marketing for EVGA.
EVGA’s new UV Plus+ Family of products which consists of the UV12 and UV16 USB graphics adapters, are based on DisplayLink network display technology, enabling Windows XP and Vista users to quickly and easily connect multiple displays to a PC or notebook via simple USB connection. EVGA said that up to four displays can be connected to a single PC provided that four UGAs are used. (More..)

Police officers practice their firearm skills on a shooting range, so why shouldn’t government computer security experts have the same kind of training ground?
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or Darpa, on Monday issued a call for research proposals to develop the National Cyber Range, or NCR, a virtual network environment for cyberwar simulation.
In other words, Darpa wants to build something along the lines of The Matrix, Star Trek’s holodeck, or a Snow Crash-style Metaverse to test cyberwar strategies and drill cyberwarriors. That’s not to say Darpa is aiming for a visually immersive world to entertain people; rather, it wants a place to pit hackers against simulated machines. (More..)

A Microsoft student promotion that slashes 91% off a copy of Office Ultimate applies to anyone with a .edu email address—and most universities offer .edu addresses to their alumni for free. Microsoft Office Ultimate, which retails for $680, is available to students for only $60 until May 16th. But if you can snag a .edu address, you too can cash in on the deal—all you have to do is get yourself an alumni email address at your alma mater. The promotion’s web site says you have to prove you’re enrolled in coursework, but the New York Times reports that a senior VP at Microsoft confirmed all you need is an .edu email address. Let us know if you snag the deal and how it goes in the comments. (More..)

The NVIDIA Quadro family of professional graphics cards are very, very expensive. But everyone knows that Quadro and GeForce graphics cards are virtually identical in hardware.
Obviously, you cannot just use Quadro drivers with your GeForce graphics cards. However, there is an easy way to soft-mod (modify in software) an NVIDIA GeForce desktop graphics card into an NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics card. We will show you just how to do it in this guide.
Here’s a quote from the guide :-"It all revolves around the driver support for professional 3D applications like 3ds Max or Maya. Quadro drivers allow the Quadro to be used to accelerate the rendering operations of such professional 3D applications while GeForce drivers do not. This is the basis for the premium prices NVIDIA (and ATI) charge for their professional-grade graphics cards." Link : NVIDIA GeForce To Quadro Soft-Mod Guide
