We have just posted a major update of the ATI Radeon HD 4870 Overclocking Guide!
As we saw in our review of the ASUS EAH4870 Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, the Radeon HD 4870 was very much superior to high-end graphics cards like the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+. It was also about 2-2.5X faster than its predecessor, the Radeon HD 3870. Now, that is what you call a quantum leap ahead in performance!
Of course, this does not mean we are not going to try overclocking the card. Even though the Radeon HD 4870 will handily tackle practically every 3D game out there, there is still a dragon left to slay and that dragon is called Crysis. The Radeon HD 4870 delivered an average frame rate of 38 fps at 1600 x 1200 and 32 fps at 1920 x 1200. Very good but it would be nice to have better frame rates, wouldn’t it? So, let’s see how well the Radeon HD 4870 overclocks!
Now at Revision 2.0, here’s a list of what we updated in the guide :
- Added a new page on the AMD GPU Clock Tool utility. - Added the benchmark results of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 graphics card. - Updated the results with Radeon HD 4870 overclocked to 820 MHz core and 1200 MHz memory. Link : ATI Radeon HD 4870 Overclocking Guide Rev. 2.0

NVIDIA launched the GeForce GTX 280 and GTX 260 graphics cards on June 17, 2008. Both are based on the NVIDIA GT200 GPU which uses NVIDIA’s improved, second-generation unified architecture. The new GT200 GPU, features amongst other things :
- 240 stream processors - Twice the number of registers - Fast local 16k shared memory (per cluster of 8 stream - processors) - New texture scheduler - Double precision accuracy - 3X ROP blending performance
As one of NVIDIA’s biggest retail partner, ASUS has no less than six different GTX 260 models. They consist of three versions, each available with or without HDMI support. The three major versions are the basic ENGTX260, the ENGTX260/G game bundle kit and the top-of-the-line ENGTX260 TOP overclocked edition. The card we are reviewing is the ASUS ENGTX260 TOP, specifically the non-HDMI version.

Intel is commemorating Labor Day this year with a trio of new processors aimed at different market segments. In the mainstream quad-core market, we have the new 45nm Core 2 Quad 8200, at 2.33GHz, 4MB L2 cache, and a 1333MHz FSB. Intel lists the chip at $224 in 1K quantities; Newegg has it up for sale for $229.99.
The new chip’s lower price tag, however, comes at the cost of several features that are otherwise standard on Core 2 Quad processors. Older Kentsfield (65nm) and most Yorkfield (45nm) processors support Intel’s Virtualization Technology, but the new Q8200 does not. Just for the record, the chip is still capable of running virtualization programs, but it lacks the hardware support for that capability that Intel has baked into its processors. According to Tech Report, LaGrande support, also known as Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TET), is also missing.(More..)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (Reuters) - Google Inc is challenging Microsoft Corp with its own Web browser that lets users run many applications that once worked only when installed on local PCs, executives said on Tuesday.
Google introduced a public trial version of its new browser software, Chrome, which is designed to handle not just text and graphics, but more complex computer programs.
Chrome, available in 43 languages in 100 countries at www.google.com/chrome, has been designed to download software and Web pages faster than existing browsers. It even allows users to keep working when one of its windows crashes. (More..)

Today there was a comic book in my mail, sent by Google and drawn by no less than Scott McCloud, creator of the classic Understanding Comics. Within the 38 pages, which I’ve scanned and put up, in very readable format Google gives the technical details into a project of theirs: an open source browser called Google Chrome. The book points to www.google.com/chrome, but I can’t see anything live there yet. In a nut-shell, here’s what the comic announces Google Chrome to be... (More..)

There are so many CPU models that it has become quite impossible to keep up with the different models or even remember their specifications.
Therefore, we decided to compile this guide to provide an easy reference for those who are interested in comparing the specifications of the various desktop CPUs in the market, as well as those already obsolescent or obsolete.
Currently covering 659 desktop CPUs, this comprehensive comparison will allow you to easily compare up to 18 different specifications for each and every CPU.

Tech ARP would like to wish Happy Merdeka 2008 to all Malaysians... We are now 51 years independent of British rule! Yay!
Perhaps we can celebrate another Merdeka this September 16 (or at least sometime this year) when we are rid of a corrupt, racist and unjust government.
Go Anwar! Go Anwar! Go Anwar! Woohoo!

The x264 HD Benchmark is the “High Definition version” of the x264 Benchmark which has become a standard CPU benchmark for Tech ARP as well as many other hardware enthusiasts.
The new x264 HD Benchmark ups the ante by using a new 720p24 high-definition video clip. Therefore, it will be a great test of the processor’s ability to encode HD quality video streams. Give it a try and let us know how your processor fares!
We have added many new CPUs to the benchmark. Let’s check out how they perform.
Here’s a quote from the article :-"Simply put, it is a reproducible measure of fast your machine can encode a short, HD-quality video clip into a high quality x264 video file. It’s nice because everyone running it will use the same video clip and software. The video encoder (x264.exe) reports a fairly accurate internal benchmark (in frames per second) for each pass of the video encode and it also uses multi-core processors very efficiently." The x264 benchmark measures how fast your machine can encode a short, DVD quality MPEG-2 video clip into a high-quality x264 video clip. It will give you results in FPS that can be used to compare the performance of different CPUs and different CPU settings.
graysky has just updated the performance tables with more CPUs. Let’s check out how they perform. You can post in your results too.
Here’s a quote from the article :-"What’s x264, you ask? It’s more or less the next-generation Xvid/DivX codec. I think it’s ideal for a benchmark because the application (x264.exe) reports fairly accurate compression results (in frames per second) for each pass of the video encoding process, and it uses multi-core processors very efficiently."
