ED#101 : NVIDIA Refutes Claims Of Bad GPUs
10:04 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Adrian Wong

Charlie Demerjian of the Inquirer reported last month that NVIDIA G84 and G86 GPUs were failing left and right. Unfortunately, not only the G84 and G86 parts are affected. According to the Inquirer, even G92 and G94 parts are failing as well.

If true, it is really very bad news, as the G92 and G94 are very popular parts, powering the GeForce 9800 GTX, the GeForce 9600 GT, the GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB and the GeForce 8800 GT. So we queried NVIDIA to get their view of the matter.

Here’s a quote from the guide :-
"If reports of failing G84 and G86 parts are not bad enough, the report of failing G92 and G94 would certainly make more than a few gamers shudder in fear. After all, these are arguably the two most popular NVIDIA GPUs in recent history. Many of us would be using graphics cards based on these GPUs and we sure do not want our cards to fail on us, do we?

We contacted our regional NVIDIA representative about the issue. We were especially interested in the claims that the G94 and G92 GPUs were also affected. The reply came in real quick but when we read it, it was obvious why. Take a look :"

Microsoft to Open Social Bookmarking for Techs
05:24 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Microsoft is not going to the social networking craze pass it by.

So get ready for the latest from the software giant in the form of a social bookmarking service aimed at developers and other members of its tech-focused communities, the Microsoft Development Network (MSDN), TechNet and Expression.

In early September, Microsoft (NADAQ: MSFT) plans to open access to those sites, making the social bookmarking application that it previewed in May generally available. (More..)

Linux Systems Being Hit By SSH-Key Attacks
05:22 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

US-CERT on Tuesday warned of attacks against Linux computers using compromised SSH keys.

SSH (Secure Shell) is a network protocol designed to provide secure network communication via public-key cryptography.

According to US-CERT, the attack appears to rely on stolen SSH keys to gain access to a system. It then uses a local kernel exploit to gain root access, whereupon it installs the "phalanx2" rootkit, derived from the older "phalanx" rootkit. (More..)

Computer viruses make it to orbit
05:20 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Nasa has confirmed that laptops carried to the ISS in July were infected with a virus known as Gammima.AG.

The worm was first detected on Earth in August 2007 and lurks on infected machines waiting to steal login names for popular online games.

Nasa said it was not the first time computer viruses had travelled into space and it was investigating how the machines were infected. (More..)

IE 8 Beta 2 ready for download
05:11 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Mozilla did its best to throw a spoiler into Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) 8 Beta 2 launch on Wednesday. But the new Ubiquity add-in for Firefox doesn’t sound all that different from what Microsoft is doing with the version of its browser due to ship in November.

That’s my take, but you can form your own opinion. Starting today, August 27, at 3 p.m. EST, Internet Explorer (IE) 8 Beta 2 became available for download by anyone who wants to give it a whirl.

As expected, there are a lot of new features that were not part of IE Beta 1 which are now available in IE 8 Beta 2. InPrivate browsing (”porn mode”) and InPrivate blocking are just two of the many new items that got added to the latest IE beta. Others include crash recovery (I’m installing just for that alone!), a “Diagnose Connection Problem” button, and Compatibility View (for sites that break when viewed in IE 8 — some examples of which are on the Redmond Pie enthusiast site). Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP
04:53 PM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users.

In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is "the product edition that is most often stolen."

Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen’s background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows XP Pro. (More..)

Kingston Technology DataTraveler BlackBox USB Flash drive Receives FIPS 140-2 Certification
12:08 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – (August 26, 2008) –Kingston Technology Company, Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the release of its first Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS)*-validated USB Flash drive, the DataTraveler BlackBox, available in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB capacities.

Gaining FIPS 140-2 certification requires a validation process that meets federal requirements set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)**, and the Communications Security Establishment of the Government of Canada. This is critical because many governmental agencies in the United States and Canada mandate that sensitive “data at rest” (i.e., all information not in the network) must be encrypted with the FIPS 140-2 standard. ATI Radeon HD 4870 Overclocking Guide
03:56 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

As we saw in our review of the ASUS EAH4870 Radeon HD 4870 graphics card, the Radeon HD 4870 was very much superior to high-end graphics cards like the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+. It was also about 2-2.5X faster than its predecessor, the Radeon HD 3870. Now, that is what you call a quantum leap ahead in performance!

Of course, this does not mean we are not going to try overclocking the card. Even though the Radeon HD 4870 will handily tackle practically every 3D game out there, there is still a dragon left to slay and that dragon is called Crysis. The Radeon HD 4870 delivered an average frame rate of 38 fps at 1600 x 1200 and 32 fps at 1920 x 1200. Very good but it would be nice to have better frame rates, wouldn’t it? So, let’s see how well the Radeon HD 4870 overclocks!

Here’s a quote from the guide :-
"The ATI Radeon HD 4870 is based on the long-awaited ATI RV770 GPU, which replaces the RV670 GPU that powered the disappointing ATI Radeon HD 3870 GPU. Both RV770 and the older RV670 are built on the same 55 nm fabrication process but that’s where the similarity ends."
