Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 280 chips might be the fastest single-GPU offerings at the moment, but they’re having a tough time competing with the Radeon HD 4870 X2 at the top end. The problem is that the GTX 280 is a packed 65nm chip that Nvidia recommends powering with a 40A 12V rail, and putting two of them on a card would make an extremely hot and power-hungry beast. However, the rumour is that Nvidia is planning a dual-GPU GTX 260 card after the company has shifted the GPUs to a 55nm process.
Tech site Expreview claims to have spoken to an anonymous informer, who says that Nvidia is planning to make GeForce GTX 260 GX2 card with two GTX 260 GPUs, and that the cards will be released in January 2009.
We asked Nvidia about the rumour, but were given the usual line that Nvidia ‘can’t comment on unannounced products.’ However, the move would make sense given that the dual-GPU Radeon HD 4870 X2 is currently a major threat to Nvidia at the top end of the market. What’s also interesting is that the rumour concerns a dual- 260 card, rather than a card with two 280 chips, implying that even a move to a 55nm process still wouldn’t make a dual-280 card practical, if this rumour is true.
Of course, this is all very much just rumour and speculation at the moment, so take it all with a firm pinch of sodium chloride.

Microsoft is doing their best to rush out Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista so there will be additional incentive for folks to upgrade to Window Vista now, instead of waiting for Windows 7. So the latest schedule should come as no surprise.

If Google delivers useless search results, just erase them and you won’t see them again.
That’s possible under a new system Google unveiled on Thursday. Hoping to give its search engine a more personal touch, Google now lets users reshuffle results so their favourite websites get top billing and disliked destinations get discarded the next time they enter the same request.
It marks the first time that the internet’s most popular search engine has allowed its audience to alter the order of search results.
Although the revisions won’t affect Google’s closely guarded formulas for ranking websites, the company isn’t ruling out eventually tapping into collective wisdom of the crowds to tweak its internet-searching algorithms.
For now, Google simply wants to make specific sets of results more useful to each individual that comes to its search engine, said Marissa Mayer, who oversees the company’s search products. Users will have to have a personal login to take advantage of the editing feature.
"It should make the search results more dynamic," she said.
The decision to let people tinker with their results is a tacit acknowledgment that not even Google’s seemingly omniscient search engine can possibly divine which websites will appeal to specific users. It also underscores how frequently people use Google to search for the same thing, such as "San Francisco hotels," over and over again.
Google’s search recipe relies so heavily on automated ingredients that a variety of startup rivals such as Mahalo, Hakia and ChaCha have tried to carve out a new niche by relying on humans to vet and point to results.
But none of those have made a dent in a market that is increasingly controlled by Google, which processes more than 60 per cent of the search requests made around the world.
Here’s how the new system, called SearchWiki, works. If you’re logged into Google when doing a search, you’ll get results with a series of buttons below the links.
Clicking on arrow pointing upward moves a result higher on the results page. That link will come back in that new spot the next time you search on the same term. Clicking on an "X" will delete the link so it doesn’t appear the next time you make the same search.
Users will also be able to open a box to make notes about different sites so they can be read again in the future. The comments also will be shared with others who are logged in, if they click on a link for "See all notes for this SearchWiki."

AMD has confirmed that the CPU that we knew under codename Deneb is going to be branded as Phenom II. This confirms our original reports and the message behind the Roman number II is that the company fixed stuff and moved on from the original Phenom issues.
The new core doesn’t have overclocking problem, doesn’t have TLB or any other cache related bug and it looks quite healthy and therefore deserves Phenom II brand.
The new CPU has 4x512KB L2 cache, 6MB of shared L3 cache and it should be available early next year just as we suggested in our earlier reports.
We also found out that AM3 version of the same CPU will be branded as Phenom II but the number after the brand will be different. AM3 Phenom II comes a bit later and the first Phenom II to launch are AM2+ only.

The Intel Core i7 is a new line of desktop processors based on the new Nehalem microarchitecture, which evolved from the Core microarchitecture which powered the highly successful Intel Core 2 line of microprocessors. Like its predecessors, the new Core i7 processors is manufactured using Intel’s 45 nm fabrication process with high-k (hafnium) dielectric and metal gate technology.
The result? A quad-core processor with 8 MB of L3 cache, integrated memory controller and QPI support, all with the same TDP of 130 W of a quad-core Core 2 processor. Amazing, isn’t it?
But how fast is it really? After all, this is a high-end enthusiast-grade processor with a very, very hefty price tag. It had better be a couple of Mach numbers faster than the Core 2 processors! Well, this is what we will be looking into this review. Not only will we examine its performance in games, we will also take a look at its performance in 3D rendering and video encoding.

"Located in a 30-story office tower in the heart of Silicon Valley, in downtown San Jose, a relatively small firm was involved in a full scale cyber crime network. The McColo Corporation operated the servers located within the building, and they were involved in hosting services for all types of firms that compromised computers to advertise counterfeit designer goods, pharmaceuticals, fake Internet security products and even child pornography by way of e-mail.
Viewing the company’s website is no longer possible, two Internet providers cut off McColo’s connectivity to the Internet. Almost instantaneously, security companies noticed a tremendous drop in the global volume of spam. E-mail security firm IronPort said that spam levels had fallen by almost 66% as of Tuesday evening.
Spam watchdog Spamcop.net stated that there was a decline of 10 - 40 spam emails per second.
At this time, it is not known whether McColo be legally responsible will be for the activities of their clients. At this time there is no confirmation that the company has been charged with a crime.
Private security researcher Jart Armin has been documenting the activity of McColo. She mentioned that currently McColo is hosted at a minimum 40 different child pornography websites, or sites that collect payment for the content. A traffic analysis of one of the sites proved that each one of these sites were generating between 15,000 and 25,000 visitors daily.
For several months, cyber criminals have been utilizing servers at McColo to manage websites that send out new versions of the “Torpig” or “Sinowal” Trojan horse program that is one of the most stealthy malware programs in existence currently.
This is just one more successful move in the government’s quest to go more seriously after spammers. Last month, the FTC seized the assets of Herbal King that was in the business of selling counterfeit prescription drugs. This network was deemed the largest “spam gang” in the world. The spammers utilized the Mega-D botnet, which reportedly was able to send 10 billion e-mail messages per day."

It’s the dawn of a new era for Intel. Tomorrow, they will officially launch the new Nehalem microarchitecture, the first microprocessor to be based on it - the Intel Core i7 processor and its attendant chipset - the Intel X58 Express.
Technical advances aside, the introduction of the new CPU socket means the new platform is not only imcompatible with LGA775 Intel processors but also the CPU coolers designed for that socket. New users migrating from the AMD platforms may find the new socket both foreign and even a little scary.
Hence, we decided to come up with a pictorial guide to show you just how easy it is to install an LGA1366 processor and its cooler. We will demonstrate the process using the spanking new Intel Core i7 processor and the cooler it ships with.

We have always advocated larger memory capacities over higher memory bandwidth to improve a PC’s real-world performance. The effect of high memory bandwidth have always been overhyped by memory vendors, because it makes good business sense. This is the situation we now see with the introduction of the new Intel Core i7 processor.
The Core i7 processor supports up to three DDR3 memory channels. Using DDR3-1333 memory, triple-channels would give you a memory bandwidth of 64 GB/s. That is a tremendous amount of memory bandwidth. But do we really, really need that kind of bandwidth? That is what we will be looking at today.
