Hard Drive Performance Comparison Guide
02:51 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Ever wanted a guide on hard drive performance, where you can compare the performance of a wide range of hard drives? Well, we are not quite there yet, but that is our ultimate objective.

In this performance comparison guide, we will test and compare the performance of all the hard drives we can get our hands on. This is similar to what we are doing in the Intel Core 2 Processor Performance Comparison Guide.

Here’s a quote from the guide :-
"WinBench 99 2.0 has proven that it can still serve as a consistent and reliable hard drive benchmark even in Windows Vista. It has given us a lot of interesting data. If the Business and High-End simulations were not good enough, the raw transfer rate results were certainly most useful. From the transfer rate results, you can see which hard drive has a higher transfer rate, and how areal density affects that performance metric. It also shot down the perception that a newer model is always faster."

Consumers Cold To Blu-Ray Players
09:55 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

The high-definition DVD format war is over, but U.S. consumers remain unenthusiastic toward players supporting the winner Blu-ray, a survey showed.

Nearly seven in 10 people polled by Harris Interactive knew that Blu-ray had beaten HD DVD, and nearly a quarter of them said they had been waiting for the rivalry to play itself out before buying an HD player. By April, however, few of the respondents had actually bought a player.

Based on an online poll of more than 2,500 U.S. adults, Harris found that nearly nine in 10 people own a standard DVD player, but fewer than one in 10 reported owning devices available today for playing HD content, namely, HD DVD or Blu-ray disc players, Sony PlayStation 3, and the external HD DVD player for Microsoft’s Xbox 360. These numbers are surprising, given that more than a third of consumers overall report owning an HDTV. (More..)

Microsoft TouchWall can inexpensively turn any flat surface into a multi-touch display
09:51 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Bill Gates will demo a new multi-touch computer and interface today called TouchWall at the Microsoft CEO Summit in Redmond.

TouchWall refers to the touch screen hardware setup itself; the corresponding software to run TouchWall, which is built on a standard version of Vista, is called Plex.

TouchWall and Plex are superficially similar to Microsoft Surface, a multi-touch table computer that was introduced in 2007 and which recently became commercially available in select AT&T stores. (More..)

Western Digital 1 TB Caviar GP Serial ATA Hard Drive Review
07:07 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Western Digital’s line of Caviar GP is the only drive in Western Digital to offer an astounding 1 terabyte capacity in a single drive! The combination of extremely large storage capacity and low power consumption was irresistible so we just had to give it a try.

Initially, it yielded poor results in WinBench 99 and compatibility problems prevented us from delivering the Platter Data Transfer Profile and the Data Transfer Rate results. So, we decided to redo the WinBench 99 tests with a small workaround. Man, did that make a world of difference! Read on and find out!

Here’s a quote from the review :-
"The Western Digital 1 TB Caviar GP delivers a terabyte of storage capacity with low power consumption at a relatively low cost. If large, affordable storage capacity in a single drive is what you are looking for, then this is the drive you are looking for."

Reducing The Power Consumption Of Overclocked PCs
02:19 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Now, that must sound pretty inane. After all, overclockers employ all kinds of power-guzzling methods to improve their CPU’s overclockability. However, there are many good reasons to do so.

In this guide, we will not just look at theoretical tips on reducing power consumption in overclocked PCs, we will also show you how well they work in real-life situations. Best of all, we will show you why they will improve your PC’s power efficiency without any real loss in performance.

Here’s a quote from the article :-
"Just by using these two tips, you can radically reduce the power consumption of your PC. The first step tackles the processor’s power consumption when it idles while the second step attacks its power consumption under load. Together, they will really bring down your overclocked PC’s power consumption. Do your bit for the planet - start using these two tips today!"

ED#89 : My Saitek Eclipse Goes Kamikaze!
03:25 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

It was just another day when I left my PC running overnight to download files while I hit the AC (air-conditioner) and went to bed. However, when I took a look at the PC the next morning, I realized that a few keys on my Saitek Eclipse keyboard were not functioning. How odd!

I had never dismantled a keyboard before. Nevertheless, I went ahead and took it apart. No beatles were found stuck under the keys and the silicone layer looked fine. Gently peeling off the silicone layer revealed the "sensor" layer. Everything looked fine at first sight, but when I took a closer look...

Here’s a quote from the editorial :-
"...the Dash/Underscore key, the Equal/Plus key, the F9 to F12 keys, the PrtScrn key, the Scroll Lock key, the Pause/Break key, the Insert and Delete keys, the Home key, the Page Up and Page Down keys, the End key, the numeric 7, 8, and 9 keys, the NumPlus key, the Volume Up and Volume Down keys as well as the Right Click key are all dead. That’s a total of 22 keys."

Office 2007 SP1 to hit Automatic Update on June 16
11:23 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Last December, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2007, much earlier than was originally announced by the company. According to the documentation for the service pack, in addition to rolling together all the patches released since the product launch, the update also includes fixes for 455 issues throughout the entire Office suite.

As usual, Microsoft is providing at least 30 days notice before allowing the service pack to be distributed automatically. The company is releasing Service Pack 1 via Microsoft Update (for Vista and XP) on June 16, 2008. Not everyone will see the update on the first day though. (More..)

Microsoft’s Project Granola–Facebook Tastier Than Yahoo?
11:18 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Project Granola?

Apparently, that’s the jokey nickname that’s been given by some in the company to Microsoft’s (MSFT) new online strategy, in the wake of its failed efforts to acquire Yahoo (YHOO) that ended in a big heap of mess this past weekend.

Now, sources tell BoomTown, it is all about “organic”–hence the image of a healthy handful of granola (except for the fact that, in my experience, nobody really likes granola after eating it as much as they think will before). (More..)

Microsoft warns of IE7 lock-in with XP SP3
11:14 AM MYT   |   Posted by: Dashken

Microsoft Corp. has warned users updating to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that they won’t be able to downgrade from Internet Explorer 7 to the older IE6 without uninstalling the service pack.

The warning first appeared in a post Monday to a company blog written by the Internet Explorer development team. Microsoft released Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update as an optional download Tuesday.

"If you choose to install XP SP3, Internet Explorer 7 will remain on your system after the install is complete," said Jane Maliouta, an IE program manager, in the blog entry. "Your preferences will be retained. However, you will no longer be able to uninstall IE7. If you go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, the Remove option will be grayed out." (More..)
