Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED

The Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED is Nikon's first wide-angle lens to feature the Vibration Reduction (VR) technology. Vibration Reduction allows the equivalent of shooting the lens at a shutter speed 3 stops faster. This reduces the effect of camera shake, especially in low light conditions.

The focal length of 24-120 mm translates into a focal length of approximately 36.5-182 mm for digital cameras like the Nikon D70. The use of two aspherical lens elements reduces the amount of distortion while two ED lens elements were used to reduce chromatic abberation.

Equipped with a Silent Wave Motor, the AF-S VR 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED focuses quickly and quietly. It also allows you to instantly adjust focus manually.

This is a great carry-around lens. It's compact, relatively light and well-balanced on the Nikon D70. You won't have any problems using it handheld for long periods of time.

Due to the crop factor of about 1.52X in the D70, this lens actually has a focal range of 36.5mm to 182mm. While not wide enough for landscape and architectural shots, this focal range still covers a wide range of useful focal lengths. That's why I love carrying it as my everyday lens.

Although it's a rather slow lens, the Vibration Reduction feature gives you the equivalent of shutter speeds that are up to 3 stops faster. This allows you to take shake-free pictures even in low-light or with shaky hands. This great feature is a big advantage as it allows me to leave the tripod or monopod at home and travel light.

If you are looking for a great general-purpose lens, this is a great lens to consider. It may not come cheap but it allows you to travel light and shoot steady without the use of a tripod or monopod. As such, we feel it deserves our Editor's Choice Award!
