The Game

The game itself comprises of the standard campaign mode, skirmish mode, and multiplayer modes. The multiplayer modes actually consist of the ranked online mode and the usual LAN game.

Well, fair enough, all the basic features we expect are in there, but the online ranking system is a nice touch. It will allow for players to pit themselves against gamers of similar skill levels.

The interface is pretty simple, easy to use, and comes with enough quick keys to satisfy even the fastest FPS fanatic. It's based on a tried and true design with nice trimmings, and doesn't get anything complex than that.

But I'm not going to get ahead of myself and spoil the rest of the review for you just yet!

Story and Cinematics

I'm going to keep it short and sweet. The story and the way it progressed was a nice touch.

The characters and even the soldiers in the field were given very human-like personalities. Even the cutscenes were very well-directed. Relic's beautiful, pencil-sketched movies make an awesome comeback since it's last showing in Homeworld 2, which totally gives it an organic and living effect.

The art direction itself was very good, with well-angled perspectives into the situation and problems surrounding the Allied campaign as they invaded Normandy.

Overall, the campaign is short but includes most facets of a good story. However, I believe that it lacks the dynamics and quickly-shifting paradigms for a complex and lively story that I loved in Homeworld. Well, nobody said that World War 2 would be as complex as sci-fi and I guess that's true.

Game Play

The gameplay in this game is as simple as it comes. Just like the Command and Conquer games of yesteryears, you click at something and your units will go take/kill/main/play dollies with it. It's as simple as that.

In that way, Relic doesn't deviate from a winner of a formula. As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But as much as sticking to old formulas go, it can seriously get boring. So the boys at Relic decided give this one genre a new spin.

Knowing the premise of the game, you can expect a fast and furious game with a tactical aspect to it, and yes, I'll say that COH totally delivers. For once, no matter what style they prefer, players have to push to crush the enemy.
