India has just suspended travel visas until 15 April 2020, as a measure to combat the threat of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Here are the details!

 

COVID-19 | SARS-CoV-2 : A Quick Explainer

First of all, let us clarify that COVID-19 (short for Coronavirus Disease 19) is the new official name for 2019-nCoV, which is informally known as the Wuhan coronavirus.

The virus itself is now called SARS-CoV-2, in recognition of how closely it resembles the SARS virus.

We will, henceforth, be using COVID-19 in reference to the disease, and SARS-CoV-2 is reference to the virus.

India Suspends Travel Visas Until 15 April 2020!

The Deputy Director of the Indian Bureau of Immigration, Dinesh Adhikari just issued this statement on travel visas and other travel restrictions India is implementing to combat the threat of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

  • All existing visas issued to nationals of any country, except those issued to Diplomats, Officials, UN or international organisations, project visas, are suspended until April 15, 2020. This visa suspension comes into effect from 1200 GMT on March 13, 2020 at the port of departure of any foreigner for onward journey to India.
  • Visas of all foreigners already in India remain valid. They may contact the nearest FRRO / FRO through e-FRRO module for extension / conversion, etc of their visa, or grant of any consular service if they choose to do so.

  • Visa-free travel facility granted to OCI card holders shall be kept in abeyance until April 15, 2020. This will come into effect from 1200 GMT on March 13, 2020 at the port of departure of any foreigner for onward journey to India.
  • Any foreign national who intends to travel to India for compelling reasons may contact the nearest Indian Mission for fresh visa.
  • All incoming travellers, including Indian nationals, arriving from any destination, and having visited China, Italy, Iran, the Republic of Korea, France, Spain and Germany on or after February 15, 2020 shall be quarantined for a minimum period of 14 days. This will come into effect from 1200 GMT on March 13, 2020 at the port of departure of such travellers.
  • International traffic through land borders will be restricted to designated Immigration Checkposts with robust medical screening facilities. These will be notified separately by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

India Issues New Travel Advisory

They also issued a new travel advisory for Indian nationals :

  • Indian nationals presently abroad are advised to avoid non-essential travel. They are hereby informed that they can be quarantined for a minimum of 14 days on their arrival in India.
  • All Indian nationals are strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel abroad. On their return, they can be subjected to quarantine for a minimum of 14 days.

 

COVID-19 : How To Keep Safe!

Here are a few simple steps to stay safe from COVID-19 :

  • Avoid suspected cases or disease hotpots, like hospitals, if possible!
  • Keep our hands clean with soap or hand sanitiser
  • Keep our home, office, vehicles, etc. clean
  • If you need to wear a surgical mask, make sure you put it on and remove it properly!
  • Thoroughly cook your food, and boil water before drinking
