COVID-19 : Malaysia Temporarily Bans Cruise Ships!

The Director General of Health, Malaysia Ministry of Health, Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, just announced that with immediate effect, the Ministry of Health has decided not to allow cruise ships to dock at Malaysian ports with immediate effect, until the COVID-19 situation in Malaysia improves.

COVID-19 : Malaysia Temporarily Bans Cruise Ships!

Here is his full statement :

In view of the recent resurgence of Covid19 cases in Malaysia and around the world, various measures are being taken by Malaysian authorities to contain local transmission and to safeguard public health.

The entry and transit of cruise vessels, passengers and crew members require considerable medical resources to be made available at ports for screening and treatment purposes.

During this difficult period, it is important that more medical resources are concentrated at hospitals to attend to medical emergencies and undertake preventive measures.

As such the Ministry of Health in consultation with other government ministries and agencies has taken a decision not to permit the entry of cruise vessels to Malaysian ports including Port Klang with immediate effect until the overall situation improves and the spread of the virus is contained.

We acknowledge that the cruise industry is an important component of Malaysia’s tourism industry and has contributed significantly to the Malaysian economy.

We are hopeful that this is a temporary measure and are confident that the concerted efforts of all parties will assist in resolving the issue at hand soonest possible.

This is an apt move, as Malaysia records almost 100 cases of COVID-19, including six new cases today.

COVID-19 : How To Keep Safe!

COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 19) is new and scary, but we are more likely to be infected and killed by the influenza virus.

We just need to practice a few simple steps to stay safe :

  • Avoid suspected cases or disease hotpots, like hospitals, if possible!
  • Keep our hands clean with soap or hand sanitiser
  • Keep our home, office, vehicles, etc. clean
  • If you need to wear a surgical mask, make sure you put it on and remove it properly!
  • Thoroughly cook your food, and boil water before drinking
