Three New COVID-19 Patients In Malaysia!

The Malaysia Ministry of Health just announced three new COVID-19 patients – two Chinese nationals and an American with recent history of travel. This brings the total number of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia to twenty-two (22).

 

COVID-19 | SARS-CoV-2 : A Quick Explainer

First of all, let us clarify that COVID-19 (short for Coronavirus Disease 19) is the new official name for 2019-nCoV, which is informally known as the Wuhan coronavirus.

The virus itself is now called SARS-CoV-2, in recognition of how closely it resembles the SARS virus.

We will, henceforth, be using COVID-19 in reference to the disease, and SARS-CoV-2 is reference to the virus.

COVID-19 Patient #20 In Malaysia : Chinese Businessman

COVID-19 patient #20 in Malaysia is a 27-year old Chinese man who arrived in Malaysia on 1 February 2020 for business. He flew to Thailand on 12 February, and returned to Malaysia on 13 February.

He was detected to have a fever on the thermal scanner while passing through the Malaysia-Thailand International Land Entry Gateway, and referred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar on the same day.

A COVID-19 screening test was performed, and came back positive on 14 February 2020.

 

COVID-19 Patient #21 In Malaysia : Chinese Spouse Of Malaysian Citizen

COVID-19 patient #21 is a 32-year old Chinese lady married to a Malaysian citizen, and residing in Malaysia.

However, she flew to China to visit her family from 22 January 2020 until 30 January 2020.

On 13 February 2020, she complained of a sore throat and was referred to a hospital for a check-up.

A COVID-19 screening test was performed, and came back positive on 14 February 2020.

She was admitted to the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi for further treatment and monitoring.

The Sultanah Maliha Hospital, you may recall, was where Malaysia chalked up its first success against COVID-19.

COVID-19 Patient #22 In Malaysia : American Tourist

COVID-19 patient #22 was an 83-year old American female who disembarked from the cruise ship in Cambodia on 13 February 2020, after being screened and cleared by the Cambodian government.

However, both she and her husband were detected to be symptomatic on arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), and referred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

They were both tested for COVID-19 by the Institute of Medical Research Malaysia (IMR) and she was confirmed to be positive on 15 February 2020. Her husband, however, tested negative.

She is currently stable and treated in the isolation ward, while her husband is being treated for his symptoms and is under observation and monitoring at the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

Those nineteen cases were classified as :

At the moment, 282 other individuals have been identified as close contacts, and the Malaysia Ministry of Health is still performing contact tracing to identify other potential close contacts.

The good news is seven (7) patients have recovered and been discharged.
