Three Fined For Assault That Caused The Low Yat Plaza Riot

Remember the theft of a Lenovo S860 smartphone that resulted in an attack on the OPPO Malaysia showroom, followed by a protest inside Low Yat Plaza that ballooned into the infamous Low Yat Plaza Riot that injured at least 5 people?

Well, that case has resulted in a conviction of not the alleged thief and his friend (who attacked and damaged the OPPO Malaysia showroom with several friends), but three salesmen who helped to apprehend them.

In this bizarre twist, it was reported that the Magistrates’ Court fined the three salesmen RM 1,800 EACH for causing hurt to Shahrul Anuar (the alleged thief) and Mohamad Khairul (his friend who later attacked and damaged the OPPO Malaysia showroom with several friends).

The accused, Low Leong Seng (29), Eric Chan Weng (23) and Soo Weng Hing (26), pleaded guilty to “causing grievous hurt” under Section 323 of the Penal Code. They were unrepresented. After pleading for leniency, Magistrate Muhamad Faizal Ismail ordered them to pay RM 1,800 each, failing which, they would be jailed for two months.

Shahrul Anuar bin Abdul Aziz (22), who has been charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code for stealing the Lenovo S860 smartphone, was beaten by the accused after he fell while running away. He is currently out on a RM 3,000 bail.

His friend, Mohamad Khairul Azmi bin Mazlan, was beaten when he tried to help Shahrul Anuar. He has currently not been charged with the vandalism and destruction of the OPPO Malaysia showroom.

No one else has been charged for inciting or organising the Low Yat Plaza riot, or causing hurt to the 5 victims (including 3 members of the media) who were injured by the mob.
