Tung Shin Hospital : 5 Patients Test Positive For COVID-19

On 6 October 2020, the Tung Shin Hospital in the Kuala Lumpur city centre announced that 5 of their patients tested positive for COVID-19.

Four were local patients detected through pre-surgery screening, while one foreigner was detected through pre-travelling screening.

The District Health Office was immediately notified, and all five patients were transferred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for treatment.

COVID-19 Cases @ Tung Shin Hospital : Should You Be Worried?

According to Tung Shin Hospital, all of their doctors, nurses and staff who attended to the five patients donned appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) and practised frequent hand sanitisation and social distancing.

They also conducted risk stratification on their staff, and the majority were determined to be in the low risk group.

Those determined to be in the medium or high risk groups were tested with rt-PCR test and placed under home quarantine for 14 days, as per MOH guidelines.

Tong Shin Hospital management also temporarily closed all affected areas for terminal cleaning, reopening them for normal operation tomorrow :

  • A&E Department
  • Specialist Clinics
  • Imaging Department
  • COVID-19 Screening Isolation Ward

It is inevitable for hospitals to detect COVID-19 cases amongst their patients, especially if they are asymptomatic.

Fortunately, they appear to be well-prepared for such an eventuality, with a dedicated COVID-19 screening and isolation ward.

Unless you were in close contact with those five patients, there would not be a significant risk, as COVID-19 primarily spreads by droplets.

That’s why it is important to maintain social distancing, wear face masks, and practice good hand hygiene.

If they determined (through contact tracing) that you are at risk, they will contact you so that you can get a COVID-19 test and undergo home quarantine.
