Debunking The WhatsApp Tick Marks Hoax

Okay, here are the reasons why the WhatsApp tick marks hoax above is completely untrue…

Reason #1 : WhatsApp only has two tick marks!

WhatsApp only uses one or two tick marks (officially called check marks). You have never seen three tick marks, because they do NOT exist!

Morpheus - WhatsApp only has two tick marks

Reason #2 : WhatsApp tick marks are only grey or blue in colour!

WhatsApp only uses two colours for their tick marks. This is what they indicate :

  • Message successfully sent.
  • Message successfully delivered to the recipient’s phone.
  • The recipient has read your message.

There is no such thing as red tick marks.

Reason #3 : WhatsApp messages are encrypted end-to-end

WhatsApp started protecting all messages using end-to-end encryption in April 2016, completing the process by the end of 2016.

End-to-end encryption protects WhatsApp messages as they are being sent from one person to another.

Every message (or file) you send is first encrypted using 256-bit AES encryption, before being send to the recipient, where it is decrypted.

WhatsApp end-to-end encryption

Because the messages are encrypted, any man-in-the-middle (like the Big Bad Government) that captures the message will see only scrambled characters.

Therefore, it is technically impossible for governments to read your WhatsApp messages.

You can read more about WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption in their whitepaper.

Reason #4 : Why should WhatsApp inform you of government actions?

The hoax absurdly claims that WhatsApp will inform you of government actions. That makes absolutely no sense at all.

It would mean that WhatsApp is directly being controlled by the government (but which government?).

WhatsApp is wholly owned by Facebook, and does not belong to any government. Not even the US government.

Reason #5 : Why should any government warn you that they’re coming for you?

Even more absurdly, the hoax claims the government will warn you that they are coming for you.

Which government on Earth (especially an evil one!) would be stupid enough to warn you that they are coming for you?

If they are coming for you, with cuffs or a court order, you can be sure they will NOT warn you first via WhatsApp!
